New Gardasil vaccine for male adolescent patients

Monday, August 15, 2011

We are now offering our male adolescent patients a vaccine that you may think is only for girls.  The “Gardasil” vaccine protects against the human papilloma virus (HPV), the sexually transmitted wart virus, and is now indicated for young men.  It is very effective against four of the serotypes of the HPV.  This vaccine is administered in the arm and is given in three doses.  Unfortunately, the HPV is very common among sexually active young adults and the vaccine protects young men from having warts on areas they do not to have warts. The vaccine is optional but now well reimbursed by most insurance companies.  Offering the Gardasil presents a good opportunity for us to talk about sexuality and sexually transmitted diseases with our patients.  Hopefully this will also prompt good conversations between our patients and their parents on this important topic. Please ask for information about the Gardasil vaccine.
